Altcoins rally on thin trading as bitcoin holds below $83,500
The CoinDesk 80 has risen around 3% in 24 hours, more than double the CoinDesk 5, while spot bitcoin ETFs lost $681 million last week.
Small tokens are outpacing the major cryptocurrencies on Monday, with the CoinDesk 80 up around 3% over the past 24 hours, more than double the 1.2% gain in the CoinDesk 5.
Bitcoin BTC$84,155.39 is trading below $83,500, after hitting a high above $84,000 on Sunday, while ether ETH$2,554.06 has added around 2.5% to trade at $2,560.
The gains are coming from the thinnest part of the market. A year on from the Oct. 10, 2025 flash crash, order-book depth for bitcoin and ether has recovered to pre-crash levels in dollar terms, while altcoin liquidity has continued to erode, according to CoinDesk research.
“Market makers have returned to majors,” Joshua de Vos, research lead at CoinDesk said in Saturday’s report.
Institutional money is heading the other way, with U.S.-listed spot bitcoin ETFs recording $681 million of net outflows last week, the most since June, according to SoSoValue. Most of the selling came on Wednesday and Thursday. Spot ether ETFs have not had a day of inflows since Sept. 28. The nine-day run of outflows is the longest since June.
Oil has eased, with WTI futures down around 2% to $90 per barrel after President Donald Trump said Russia would supply 300,000 metric tons of diesel to global markets, a partial easing of sanctions. Attention now turns to Wednesday’s U.S. consumer price index.
Diversified RWA stablecoins sustain 5-7% yield from real credit as crypto funding compresses to ~4%. GENIUS pushes yield off-chain; TAM grows to $4B in 3 years.
Asanat Analysis — Why it matters
The 3% rally in the CoinDesk 80 versus 0.6% for the CoinDesk 5 reveals a classic risk-on rotation: money rotating from megacap (Bitcoin, Ethereum) into smaller-cap alts when market conviction weakens. This pattern typically emerges when institutional confidence in the macro narrative is uncertain—here signaled by $681M in spot Bitcoin ETF outflows last week, suggesting profit-taking or repositioning rather than accumulation at current levels.
Thin trading conditions amplify this divergence, making altcoin moves less meaningful as directional signals. Low liquidity means modest capital rotations produce outsized percentage gains without underlying demand catalysts. The fact that Bitcoin remains capped below $83,500 despite altcoins climbing indicates range-bound consolidation rather than a breakthrough. Historically, this setup precedes either a macro resolution (break above resistance or capitulation below support) within 1-3 weeks, or a reversion trade as altcoin gains evaporate on lower volumes.
