Bitcoin holds $83,000 as dollar strength keeps markets on edge

Bitcoin and gold hold steady as a firm dollar and rising bond yields weigh on sentiment, while IREN secures a multiyear cloud services deal with Anthropic.

Markets are making a cautious start to the week, with bitcoin trading just above $83,000 and gold around $4,180 an ounce, both down roughly -0.5%. Tech futures are slightly lower, while WTI crude is edging higher above $92 a barrel. Bond yields are also ticking up as bond prices fall, following a brief recovery in the second half of last week that saw TLT, the long-dated U.S. Treasury ETF, gain more than 2%. The dollar remains firm, with the DXY index above 102.4.

Wednesday’s U.S. inflation report is the week’s key macroeconomic event. Annual core inflation is expected to come in at 2.5%, while headline inflation is forecast at 3.7%, which would mark a reacceleration from the previous month.

IREN IREN, which has repurposed from bitcoin mining into AI infrastructure, has secured a multiyear cloud services agreement with artificial intelligence firm Anthropic, according to The Information. IREN shares are up 4% pre-market.

Asanat Analysis — Why it matters

Bitcoin's consolidation at $83k amid dollar strength reflects the inverse relationship between USD performance and risk assets that has persisted since Fed tightening cycles began. A firm dollar typically signals either higher real rates or safe-haven flows, both of which reduce the appeal of non-yielding assets like BTC. The fact that Bitcoin is holding rather than capitulating suggests institutional accumulation at support levels, but the 'on edge' framing indicates traders are positioned for potential breakdown if dollar momentum accelerates further.

Gold's parallel strength with Bitcoin is notable—traditionally an uncorrelated pair. This dual stability despite headwinds suggests macro uncertainty is driving allocation rather than pure risk-off dynamics. Rising bond yields (which hurt both assets) competing with USD strength (which typically helps yields) creates an unusual regime. The IREN-Anthropic deal, while relegated to a clause, signals enterprise infrastructure confidence in AI services, a sector with significant power/capex demands that could pressure rates if it scales.

The 'on edge' setup warns of fragile equilibrium. Hawkish Fed communications, further dollar appreciation, or yield spike above 4.5% could trigger cascading liquidations in leveraged positions. For portfolio managers, this is a regime where macro hedges matter more than directional conviction.
