Bitcoin holds near $80,000 as oil retreats and the Fed decision looms
Bitcoin was little changed near $80,400 since midnight UTC while the DeFi index was the only CoinDesk index to gain, with the Fed due to decide on Wednesday.
Bitcoin BTC$84,459.46 steadied near $80,400 after dipping to around $79,300 during the Asian morning, leaving it little changed since midnight UTC. Altcoins were mixed, with ether ETH$2,490.55 dropping 0.2% and the DeFi index (DFX) the only CoinDesk index to gain. The tone was set at the weekend, when Arthur Hayes said his Maelstrom fund sold its entire directional book, including 6,400 ether due to macro and geopolitical risk.
S&P 500 index futures rose around 0.3% after Friday’s selloff in U.S. stocks, while oil retreated, with U.S. crude falling around 2% to near $101 a barrel and Brent slipping to around $110 as Qatari mediators arrived in Tehran on Sunday and President Donald Trump said there would be no strike that day, though he kept the option open.
The Fed, which raised interest rates in September, decides again on Wednesday. The CME’s FedWatch tool shows a 90% chance of no change and around an 80% chance of another increase in December. Spot bitcoin ETF flows are also in focus after $138 million of outflows on Friday, taking the two-day exit to $772 million, according to data from Farside Investors.
Diversified RWA stablecoins sustain 5-7% yield from real credit as crypto funding compresses to ~4%. GENIUS pushes yield off-chain; TAM grows to $4B in 3 years.
Asanat Analysis — Why it matters
Bitcoin's consolidation near $80k ahead of a Fed decision reflects the asset class's persistent sensitivity to macro monetary policy, despite claims of decoupling. Oil's retreat and the absence of directional conviction in BTC suggest traders are pricing in uncertainty rather than a specific outcome—a posture typical when central bank guidance could shift risk appetite across equities and alternative assets simultaneously. The $80k level has functioned as both support and resistance over multiple cycles; holding it signals neither capitulation nor breakout appetite.
The DeFi index outperformance is notable because it decouples from Bitcoin's price action, suggesting protocol tokens may be drawing flows based on fundamentals (yield, governance, TVL dynamics) rather than macro sentiment. This divergence has historically preceded periods where on-chain productivity diverges from price momentum. The Fed's Wednesday decision will likely act as a catalyst reallocator—hawkish surprises typically compress risk appetite across crypto, while dovish signals can redirect capital from stable assets into higher-beta DeFi positions. Traders should monitor whether the consolidation breaks upward post-decision or whether $80k becomes a redistributive range.
