Live updates: Oil falls as Iran signals possible hormuz reopening, bitcoin holds near $86,000

WTI crude oil drops to $89 as reports suggest Iran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days.

Iran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the U.S. eases military pressure and lifts its port blockade, according to multiple reports citing a senior Iranian official.

Oil prices subsequently fell with WTI crude more than 2.5% lower at $89 a barrel, roughly 15% below its September high. Brent crude dropped below $98 a barrel.

A sustained de-escalation in the Middle East could provide a tailwind for risk assets, with lower energy prices easing inflationary pressures and concerns over further interest rate hikes.

Bitcoin is consolidating around $86,000 following Monday’s sharp rally, which took it to an intraday high of $87,300. Gold is little changed over the past 24 hours at approximately $4,336 an ounce.

Asanat Analysis — Why it matters

Oil's decline on de-escalation signals typically reduce haven-asset demand, a headwind for Bitcoin's geopolitical risk premium. Historically, periods of reduced Middle East tension have coincided with risk-on rotations away from non-yielding assets like BTC. However, Bitcoin's stability near $86k despite the oil move suggests the market is pricing in macro factors beyond geopolitics—likely Fed policy expectations and the upcoming U.S. election cycle, which have become more dominant drivers than regional conflict risk.

The Hormuz signal is material for crypto infrastructure broadly. Sustained oil volatility has been a leading indicator for margin liquidations and vol-of-vol spikes in crypto derivatives markets. A stabilizing oil backdrop could reduce cascade-liquidation risk, though it simultaneously diminishes the inflation-hedge narrative that has anchored BTC valuations during commodity super-cycles. The real test: whether macro liquidity expansion (the actual bull case for $86k+) remains intact if energy prices normalize.
